Ancient Greece and Socrates
As a young man, the Greek Philosopher, who as a kid worked as a stone mason. He started out from that to one of the most well know Greek Philosophers in history! As time passed and Socrates grew older, he fought heroically in the Peloponnesian War. The Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC) was an ancient Greek war fought by the Delian League led by Athens against the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta. Socrates wasn't given any thing, if he wanted something, he earned it. His working class background and battlefield experiences may have shaped the way he viewed the world. As a volunteer teacher, he met with the youth of Athens and he would ask a question, they would answer, and he would then ask a follow up question to their answer. These questions would be how his students felt about something like what do you think about our Gods(Greek Gods), or do you think they exist. When higher authorities found out about his teachings, he was charged with two crimes. #1, Corruption of Athens Youth, and #2, Impiety. When his defense came he could have just said sorry but he said, and i quote from class, "It's my job to be the gad fly to the lazy, sluggish horse that is Athens" and "I should actually be rewarded with free dinners for life." A jury of 500 male citizens voted guilty on his trial (279 people voted guilty and 221 people voted innocent). His sentence was death to drinking the Hemlock poison that kills you in about an hour by making you drown on land. He had the opportunity to escape but refused in doing so to show his loyalty to the city of Athens.
